Fishing at its highest competitive levels is very much an individual sport, where an angler must look to himself to battle the elements, and remain focused on the task at hand, in order to find, and catch, the fish.

However, on every other level of sport fishing, fishing is enhanced by sharing it with family and friends, and it becomes a very social activity.

Some of my fondest memories are fishing with my family at our summer home in Connecticut, having friendly competitions with friends during a spring break in college, as well as fishing with my good friend Joey while filming Sweetwater.

Now, with a new social fishing platform called Hooked, it has never been easier to share your fishing experiences, and compete, with other avid fishermen and women across the world, as well as learn from your own fishing experiences.

Friendly Competition

Enjoy a little friendly competition, and learn, with your friends, from anywhere in the world.

I always enjoy fishing with a friend, like Joey, because I get to see fishing from a different perspective, and learn from what he is doing- not to mention the camaraderie, and competitive, aspect of fishing with a friend.

With the Hooked app-which I have downloaded on my iPhone- I am able share these same fishing experiences with a good friend, or good many friends, even if they aren't on the same boat, lake, or even in the same state as me.  Best of all, I can compete with them from any location.

By setting up a Hooked competition you are able to log your fish catches, and view your friend's catches, which includes the location and all the factors relating to that catch.

I've already had several competitions with friends, and even though we never really put money on the line, I've had a blast seeing how they approach a lake from a different point of view, and learning from them.

Connecting The Dots

I'm a student of the sport, and I love learning new things, especially learning them from others like I do with the competition aspect of the Hooked app.  However, sometimes the best lessons I have learned have been right under my nose, due to patterns in my catches that I didn't immediately notice.

Documenting your catches thoroughly will help you realize patterns down the line.

With Hooked, I can use the app to log my catches for personal use, in order to analyze the factors that led to a catch, or series of fish catches.

On the app, my catches show up on a map of the lake that I am fishing, and every time I catch a fish, I record it on the app and input the data that I feel that affected that catch.  Once I log a few fish, I like to look at that map and see where the catches have come from, and many times I start to notice a pattern that ends up unlocking a key to catching more fish.

A good example would be a recent trip of kayak fishing on a small local lake.  I had caught about a half dozen fish, but there didn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the catching.  After inputing  my sixth fish catch, I looked at the map to discover that all of my fish catches did in fact have a common thread- each fish was caught off of an area where the shoreline made a point, but I could not see that it did past the reeds.  I then started targeting these hidden points and absolutely killed it the rest of the day.
